A survey on American gamers

Recently, we conducted a representative survey in the US to better understand gamers, their browsing habits and favorite types of games, with some expected, and some interesting, results.

We started with operating systems and found that 14% of people play computer games on their macOS devices, while 82% use Windows machines, as you can see in the image below. Although not dominant on the market, Mac remains a relevant gaming environment.

Opera’s survey shows the types of issues that US gamers experience. Opera GX solves them

We also asked about the technical issues people encounter while playing games.

As it turns out, 49% of people experience some technical issues: 30% are troubled by network problems, 26% by memory issues and 14% run into CPU trouble.

Luckily, this is one of the areas in which Opera GX shines, on both Mac and Windows, offering a unique set of features that help resolve these problems. The set of browser limiters, which includes a Network Bandwidth Limiter, as well as CPU and RAM Limiters, prevents the browser from becoming resource-hungry. What this boils down to is that your machines are left with more resources for running games.

Opera GX’s set of features is unique and relevant to every person who is serious about games. Ever since the launch of the Windows version during E3 in Los Angeles, we have been receiving many requests to add Mac support. We are happy to now be bringing the unique GX experience to macOS users.

The younger you are, the more you play

This one is pretty obvious, but it’s interesting to see the exact numbers. According to our research, American gamers spend an average of 1-2 hours a day playing games. Gamers below 24 years of age, however, spend more than 2 hours a day playing games. Men tend to play more than women: 41% of male respondents and 36% of female respondents respectively spend two hours a day gaming.

Women and men also like different types of games, or at least to different extents: Most men prefer first person shooters, followed by role playing games and simulation sports games, while women’s favorite games are role-playing games, followed by first person shooters and simulation sports games. Men in general also seem to play a wider variety of games while women enjoy playing puzzle games like Candy Crush and memory games on their mobile phones.

Our survey did not collect specific information about who is better at various games, as we could not expect honest answers – especially among those being surveyed along with their partners. This is, however, an interesting course of study for the future.

Most people watch games on YouTube

According to the results, 65% of those surveyed follow games on YouTube, followed by 25% using Twitch and 12% resorting to Mixer, with some overlap. Though Twitch is, in fact, dominant in streaming, YouTube is a more accessible resource for previously recorded gameplay. Remote Development with Visual Studio Code.

Regardless of where you get your gaming-fix, Opera GX’s Network Limiter will help you control the network bandwidth your browser uses, ensuring you can play a game alongside without lag. Also, the Twitch sidebar integration makes it easier to follow your favorite streamers while the Video pop-out function allows you to play YouTube or other videos on top of your game.

The currently most-played games

16% of American gamers typically try a new game every day, while 64% do so twice a month or less frequently. Currently, the most popular game among those surveyed is Minecraft, followed by Fortnite, World of Warcraft and NBA2K. Scrabble was not factored in.

These statistics change frequently, which is one of the reasons that Opera GX includes a dedicated GX Corner – a special space with news about games, upcoming game releases, as well as the best deals and discounts from all over the web – so that you can always stay up to date in the wide world of gaming

US gamers love a personalized user interface

Opera GX also includes a personalized user interface, which allows you to adjust the browser to your color preferences and match your gaming setup, whether you prefer shiny, serious, the resurgence of 80’s neon or simple dark surroundings.

The world’s first gaming browser, Opera GX, is available for download on both Mac and Windows at www.opera.com/gx.

Opera GX lets gamers control their computer’s CPU and memory usage to make gaming and streaming smoother. It also features Twitch integration and numerous customization options.

Hello,

Today, we would like to invite you to try something completely new. Opera GX is a specially tuned version of the Opera browser, with new and unique features and design meant for people who love to play computer games. Right now, we are opening the early access program (for Windows), which means that, starting today, you will be able to download and test the browser and shape it with us. We will be launching the final version later this year.

GX Control lets you control the CPU and RAM usage by the browser

The GX Control panel is a brand new feature which lets you define how much of your computer’s CPU or RAM you are willing to let the browser use. By toggling on the circle, you can choose to devote a certain percentage of the computer’s resources to the browser. Opera GX will stay within these limits. This means that, unlike other memory-hungry browsers, Opera GX puts you in full control of your gaming and browsing experiences.

We introduced this feature because running a game might require a lot of effort from your machine, even more so if you are streaming while you play. We found that many gamers often shut down their browsers in order to not slow down their gaming experience. Thanks to GX Control, games can run more smoothly without requiring you to compromise on what you do on the web.

Gaming ready with Twitch integration

Opera GX’s Twitch integration is another handy feature. The browser lets you log into your Twitch account directly from the sidebar and will notify you when a streamer you follow goes live.

The browser’s speed dial screen is also different from the one you know from our main browser – it features shortcuts to sites popular among gamers including Discord, YouTube and Reddit.

We also created the GX Corner, a place where gaming news from the web will be presented along with curated gaming deals and information about new and interesting releases.

Gaming design, sound effects and gaming hardware integration

When you first start or upgrade Opera GX you will be welcomed by sounds and an animation sequence inspired by gaming consoles. The sound effects and musical logo creation in GX are a result of Opera’s collaboration with the sound designer Rubén Rincón and the band Berlinist, who recently received a nomination in the BAFTA Games Awards for the original soundtrack to the Gris game. You will be able to adjust or switch off the sound effects, as well as most browser features in the settings panel.

Opera GX comes out of the box with a sleek gaming-inspired design with dark and red elements. You can also choose a different highlight color from 10 suggested colors or go deeper and choose from 16 million possibilities using the extended color picker feature. We designed it to feel at home on any gaming setup.

Opera GX comes with an exclusive set of wallpapers designed to match the browser and the large displays of gaming setups. It also includes Razer Chroma integration, which means that the keyboard, mouse and other Razer Chroma elements will adjust their colors to the chosen highlight colors in the browser.

Opera’s powerful features are there

Opera GX includes all the features present in the Opera desktop browser. This means that, apart from the Twitch integration, you can also use the Telegram, WhatsApp, Facebook or Vkontakte messengers in the sidebar to stay in touch with friends without the need to open separate tabs.

Opera GX also retains the popular video pop out function which makes it easy to pop out a video from the website it is being streamed on and watch it on top of other websites.

Our built-in ad blocker will safeguard that websites load fast and distraction free while the free, no-log browser VPN will let you safely browse the web when using public WiFi.

We’ve summarized all the key features in an image:

Early access at Level 1 starts today

The early access to Opera GX for Windows starts today at Level 1, during E3 in Los Angeles. Instead of the usual versions, the browser’s development will progress in levels. The initial early access version is designed for those of you who love games. It also gives you the opportunity to shape the next versions, as our developers have added special feedback boxes throughout the browser, where particular features can be rated with one to five hearts. We would also like to encourage you to provide feedback and wish lists via the Opera GX forums.

Download Opera GX. A final version is planned for launch later this year.
